RE-IMAGINING CAPE TOWN'S FORESHORE

Between 11-15 February 2013 the University of Cape Town's School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics recently embarked on a traditional 1 week long design exercise called VERTICAL STUDIO 2013: RE-IMAGINING CAPE TOWN'S FORESHORE. This exercise saw the entire department's near 300 students in Urban Design, Landscape Design, Planning and Architecture, lead by the Masters of Architecture (Professional) class of 2013, split into 30 groups made up of individuals at each level of study.

The task was set in the City's Foreshore District and required that each group produce a short 2-3 minute film depicting their perception of the area, a design proposal that best demonstrates their vision for the area and a unique group photograph. The week long event culminated in a highly successful exhibition hosted at the Oceana House (sponsored by the KIA JOY TRUST Georgiou Family), and peeked the interests of a very diverse audience.

The design proposals curated as individual A0 format group posters were the key focus of the work displayed, and along with the A3 group photographs, were assessed by an esteemed panel of judges.

Here are the design proposals as they were presented.
