CAPE TOWN: WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL 2014

The World Design Capital (WDC) title is awarded  bi-annually by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) to provide a global platform for cities that use design to improve social, economic and cultural development. With half the world’s population living in cities, it has become essential to incorporate design in the creation of globally competitive, liveable and efficient spaces.

Cape Town will be the fourth WDC and first African city to host this prestigious event. This presents the opportunity to highlight African issues of social separation, poverty, the imbalances that exist in our society and how design can be used for reconciliation and unity.

Other than holding six major events throughout the year, WDC 2014 will be a platform for all local designers to celebrate, exhibit and explore ideas which foster inclusive, sustainable and innovative design solutions. The success of WDC 2014 will be in how we address our complex spatial and social challenges, showcasing the power of design in addressing the complexity of cities of cultural difference.
